NORTH ALABAMA (WAFF) -

Free guided walking tours will be held in 33 towns across Alabama each Saturday morning in April, including Albertville, Athens and Huntsville/Madison.

In Albertville, the tours will start at the local Chamber of Commerce. The tour will be about a mile long at a leisurely pace. The tours start at 10 a.m. and will last about an hour. Community leaders will escort groups, sharing personal remembrances and tall tales.

The Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association invite all to take part in a stroll the Old Athens City Cemetery, the Beaty and Houston Historic Neighborhoods and the Historic Downtown Square. These tours will last one hour, starting at 10 a.m. at the meeting room of the Athens Visitor Center. Four tours will be offered each Saturday in April. The tour guides will share their knowledge of the history of local businesses, the architecture of homes, some of which date back to the late 1800s, and the Sacking of Athens by Col. Turchin during the Civil War. No reservations are required, and the tours are free.

The Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Center will also offer free guided walking tours of two of the area's five historic districts: Twickenham and Madison Historic District. All walking tours will start at 10 a.m. The Twickenham tours will leave from the Confectionery Shop at Alabama Constitution Village on April 5 and 12, and the Madison tours will leave from the Little Roundhouse in downtown Madison on April 19 and 26.

These free walking tours were initiated by the Alabama Tourism Department back in 2003.
