Man killed during police standoff

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Police confirmed that a man who shot and wounded an officer died during the resulting standoff.

The shooting happened early Friday morning at a home on the 2000 block of Stanford Drive off of Governors Drive.

A police spokesman said the officer was hit by a shotgun blast while responding to a domestic disturbance call around 1:30-1:45 a.m.

Police said a man continued to fire shots at officers from the back of the home and reportedly barricaded himself inside. Authorities said the man died from gunshot wounds during a standoff with police.

Authorities said no one else was in the house at the time of the shooting.

Police evacuated nearby homes on Stanford Drive. Evacuees were taken to First Baptist Church on Governors Drive, but have since been allowed back in their homes.

Another WAFF photographer saw a woman being put into an ambulance. It is not known how she is related to the standoff.

Authorities said the wounded officer was taken to Huntsville Hospital. The officer suffered moderate non-life threatening injuries from a shotgun blast.

Governors Drive was blocked from Memorial Parkway to Huntsville Hospital but has reopened.
