HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Redstone Arsenal's garrison commander revealed the precautions taken following the Fort Hood shooting.

Colonel Bill Marks said Redstone is there for Fort Hood in any capacity they might need. He said the shooting will test their resiliency. He said when he first learned about the shooting, arsenal leaders alerted all force protection personnel.

Colonel Marks said he has several close friends serving at Fort Hood and he knows other Redstone personnel have close ties to the Army post.

"I'm saddened that anyone has to go through that type of tragedy, and of course the next thing you want to know is how you can help. And that's going to be determined, on what is needed," he said.

Reports indicate the shooter at Fort Hood was possibly undergoing tests for post-traumatic stress disorder. The commander said military leaders care and want people to reach out, and there are services readily available to help for soldiers in need. Leaders and other personnel are trained to ask the questions, recognize the warning signs, and alert someone of a possible issue.

"If someone was bleeding, you would help them. It is the same thing with behavioral health issues. People want to help and apply that buddy-aid," said Colonel Marks.

He said right now, all of his thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families in Texas.

Meanwhile, the garrison commander confirmed the Army post will go through active shooter training in the coming weeks. The training had been planned long before the Fort Hood shooting. An exact date has not been announced.
