HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville International Airport is now a "storm ready" site. Huntsville is one of 12 airports across the country and the first in the southeast to hold this distinction.

The "storm ready" program is voluntary.

To be recognized as storm ready, a site or community must develop a bad weather plan, establish a 24-hour warning point, and have multiple ways to get critical severe weather information.

Restrooms around the airport have been chosen as the best available protective area.

"They are the safest areas that we feel we can get a large number of people into quickly, so in a lot of our public restrooms, you'll see signage that we designated as safe areas at the airport," said Director of Operations Kevin Vandeberg.
