COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Security changes may be on the way for the Colbert County Courthouse. Commissioners are waiting on a security report as they consider making changes.

Courthouse officials met last week with a representative from Alabama Public Safety. They conducted a walkthrough of the facility and discussed possible changes that would help put more people at ease.

Colbert County Revenue Commissioner Tommy Oswalt said he still fears what could have happened two weeks ago, when a man was caught with a loaded handgun inside the courthouse.

"He placed a weapon in between papers and walked in the courthouse. He walked past my office, walked down the hall, came back, walked back down the hall again, came back up and talked to my receptionist," he recalled. "Then he proceeded to go upstairs to the courtroom where he was supposed to be."

A deputy at the top of the stairs immediately stopped the man and took him into custody. Oswalt said the incident left him thinking about his employees and their children.

Oswalt and other employees are hopeful something will be done to help protect everyone inside.

Chairman Charlie Hovater said Wednesday the initial report shows there is room for improvement, but they are waiting for the completed report before making any changes.
