A wounded warrior arrived in Marshall County for the first time Wednesday to see his home under construction; a home being built by volunteers.

Corey Garmon has progressed from being wounded in action to being a family man. He is married, with a child, and will soon have a new home.

"Excited" is a good word to describe Corey as he arrived Wednesday to see walls going up at his new Guntersville home. Specialist Garmon has been rehabilitating at a Maryland hospital after being seriously wounded in an IED explosion in Afghanistan in 2012.

This week, volunteers from all over the country are in town framing the home that is being built specially for the wounded warrior. Several of the volunteers are former soldiers who haven't seen one another in nearly 30 years, but came together to spend time for a common cause.

"My friend Tom and I still have a tremendous amount of respect for our First Sergeant David Akins. He's done a lot to help with this project in awards and certificates," said Oregon volunteer Jim Gregory. "It means a lot, it really does. We're all veterans, so to be able to help Corey out is just the honorable thing to do."

With Corey and his family standing by, certificates of appreciation signed by Governor Robert Bentley were handed out by Guntersville Mayor Leigh Dollar on the job site.

"I was very excited to be home first of all," said Corey. "But to see what they've done in the past 24 hours has been awesome."

The current group of volunteers is expected to leave over the weekend, to be replaced by new team members.

Garmon will head back to the hospital over the weekend. He is expected to be fully released later this month. You can keep up with his progress at his website and find out how you can lend a hand.
