ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

One Tennessee Valley city is taking the time to send care packages to deployed soldiers in Afghanistan.

Captain Erik Waddell is Commander of the 663rd Engineer Company. He is also the building inspector for the City of Athens.

City leaders collected Girl Scout cookies, coffee and creamer, lip balm, cooling wraps, lotion and more for the packages. They have already sent six boxes and have five more to ship out this week.

Waddell and his company are training the Afghan National Army how to operate and maintain heavy engineer equipment.

Commander Waddell sent an email of appreciation to the city, in which he said, "It is amazing how simple packages from home change the morale of the troops and bring a smile to the faces of everyone involved."

"We all appreciate your efforts and look forward to completing our mission and returning home," he wrote.
