PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

It was standing room only in Council Chambers on Tuesday as family and community members packed the room to celebrate Mayor Eddie Lowe's proclamation to Reverend Boddie.

It's an honor that those in attendance say is fitting for such a man.

Phenix City leaders approved a proposal to rename part of 10th Street after long-time resident and minister Reverend William Boddie in February. Today in council, the street sign and proclamation were awarded to Reverend Boddie.

As the four generations of his family and the community stood in awe, the 94-year-old had this to say about the honor.

"I just want to express my gratitude to all persons present for the support," Reverend Boddie said confidently.

After reading the proclamation, council members and family headed to the site where police blocked off the road and the sign was unveiled at the corner of what used to be 10th Street and the current 10th Avenue.

Cheering on the mentor, minister and political leader so many in the community say they grew to know and love. Council members say it's a legacy they want to always remember.

"You never know where your influence is going to go and I'm glad you lived long enough to see lots of this," said councilmember Gail Head.

While the community praised Reverend Boddie for his life of service and accomplishments, his children say, to them, the best title for the man many call a local legend is Dad. And they're pleased that Phenix City chose their dad for such an honor.

"My father has always believed in the good of man," Reverend Boddie's daughter, Juanita Saleslee proudly explained. "And for him to be recognized by Phenix City, it really personifies his belief in the world that it is well."

Dozens showed up to celebrate the dedication. The portion of 10th Street that has been renamed starts at the corner of 10th Avenue. It starts the street where Reverend Boddie has lived on for more than 50 years.
