MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) -

Governor Robert Bentley signed "Carly's Law" Tuesday.

The legislation allows a study at the University of Alabama at Birmingham to examine the effectiveness of cannabidiol oil, or CBD oil, to treat seizure disorders such as epilepsy.

CBD oil is derived from a strain of marijuana which does not produce the chemical high of more common types of the plant.

Carly's Law is named after 3-year-old Carly Chandler of Birmingham, who suffers from a severe neurological disorder.

The law will go into effect June 1.
