Community rallies to support infant battling cancer

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Landon Shaw is a very sick little boy.

The 5 month old is at Children's Mercy Hospital battling a rare childhood cancer and his parents, Brandon and Alyssa Shaw, are off work so they can be by his side while also supporting three other children.

The small northwest Missouri community of Tarkio is rallying in support of Landon Shaw and his family. Beyond prayers and positive thoughts, fundraisers are being held.

One of the fundraisers is the Cold Water challenge. It involves people jumping into a chilly body of water and pledges being made to help the family.

The hope is to spread the word through social media so it takes off beyond Missouri. A soldier in Afghanistan has been sprayed with hoses as part of his commitment. You can find more on the Plunge for Landon page at this link.

The family is incredibly touched by all the efforts and the videos being shared on the page.

Alyssa Shaw said her son started getting sick when he was about 2 months old.

"Things were just getting worse. He kept gagging and throwing up so we decided to come down here," she said.

He has been at the hospital for weeks now after being diagnosed with tumors. A tumor about the size of a golf ball is in his brain, and one the size of a quarter is in his kidney.

Children's Mercy has one of the largest pediatric oncology departments in the country. Doctors removed Landon Shaw's left kidney and most of the tumor in his brain.

"He's a miracle. He's my sweet little baby," his mother said.

But he needs weekly chemotherapy and radiation treatments for the next year, his father said. It's two hours to get from his home to Children's Mercy.

His parents are keeping the faith and know that Landon is a fighter.

"He always has a smile on his face. He looks at us with his eyes and tells us he is going to be OK," Alyssa Shaw said.

Donations and get-well cards can be mailed to Flower Mill, 606 Main St., Tarkio, MO, 64491.

David: Showers and storms ongoing across the Valley

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
