ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

Employees with the city of Athens came together to donate care packages to soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

Erik Waddell, the city's building inspector, was deployed with the 663 Engineer Company. Waddell has the rank of captain and is commander of the company which is working to train the Afghan National Army on how to operate and maintain heavy engineer equipment.

City employees have sent out six care packages and were able to box up five more. Vendors in Athens also added to the donations.

"It is amazing how simple packages from home change the morale of the troops and bring a smile to the faces of everyone involved," said Waddell.

Some of the items donated were Girl Scout cookies, coffee and creamer, shaving cream, drink mix and cooling wraps.
