DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

A Decatur family has questions for the city police department after their father died following his arrest and incarceration in the city jail.

They want to know what happened after Decatur Police arrested Marty Whisman outside a bar early Sunday morning.

The family said Whisman drove down from Columbia SC to spend the weekend with his family. His daughter Jennifer said she and her father went to Geno's Pub Saturday night.

Police said they were called to the bar after a fight in the parking lot. They arrested Jennifer for public intoxication, and then Marty after he tried to intervene.

The family said they alerted police about the victim's heart condition. A corrections officer found Marty Whisman unresponsive hours later in his cell.

"When you put handcuffs on somebody, you have taken over the right to watch over their well-being," said Marty's son, Michael Whisman. "To me, if you've just put a man in the back that has heart problems and you don't check on him, then you're responsible."

A Decatur Police spokesperson said the ABI is investigating and police are not commenting at this time. The family said authorities conducted an autopsy Monday. The results of that autopsy are pending.
