MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) -

Alabama lawmakers said a recent bill aimed at cracking down on copper thefts is working.

The bill passed in 2012 and set stiffer penalties for metal thieves. New regulations were developed for people who buy scrap metal.

According to the Alabama Division of Risk Management, copper theft claims have dramatically decreased in the last year.

Insurance claims show copper thefts have been declining steadily since 2010, with a sharp drop after the law went into effect.
