Last call: Healthcare Marketplace shutting its doors soon

DECATUR, GA (CBS46) -

Long lines and waits are expected Monday, as the final day to enroll for healthcare without penalty is finally here.

The intensity of enrollment events has been picking up in recent weeks. According to Whitney Horton, for the past two weeks, each event she has run has had at least 25 people in attendance.

Horton works with Get Covered America and has seen people arriving up to a half-hour early, just to make sure they get in with a minimal wait time.

Those wait times can be too much for some people who have other obligations. Jameelah Shabazz is one of those people.

She lost her health insurance six months ago when, according to her, the employer she works for decided to stop offering health insurance.

Shabazz says she was told the benefit had become too expensive for her employer to carry.

After two months of trying to figure out what to do, Shabazz says she started looking for health insurance.

It wasn't until two weeks ago that she sought the help of a Health Care Marketplace navigator.

That's when she realized that waiting so long to get coverage may have been a mistake. "I went to several other locations, and they was overcrowded with attendance, and I wasn't able to get attended to," said Shabazz.

That changed Saturday, when she came to the Porter Sanford Center in DeKalb County.

She was able to get in and work with a navigator to get the coverage she needed.

She even got what appears to be a good deal. "I believe it's going to be more benefits, and it's going to come out about even," said Shabazz.

Only time will tell though. Shabazz wants to test out her new insurance before singing its praises.

Meanwhile, Horton is expecting an even bigger rush than normal Monday, the final day to sign up.

To sign up, visit www.Healthcare.gov. You may also call 866-893-8446 and speak with a Path to Health counselor for information and enrollment assistance.
