NEW MARKET, AL (WAFF) -

A World War II veteran from New Market will be recognized with France's highest honor on Monday.

Harold McMurran will be one of five WWII veterans from Alabama and Tennessee to receive the Legion of Honor during the ceremony. McMurran was a Technician 5th Grade in the 546th Ordnance Heavy Maintenance in the 3rd Army.

Officials said this honor has been awarded in order to express France's gratitude to those who helped liberate the country from oppression from 1944-1945. Denis Barbet, the Consul General of France in Atlanta, will bestow the Legion of Honor. The National Order of the Legion of Honor recognizes service to the French Republic, and recipients are designated by President of the Republic François Hollande.

The ceremony will last from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel in Nashville.
