Cleaning up the Cape Fear area, and teaching kids a lesson

The Cape Fear Volunteer Center organizers want to get 600 kids to volunteer this year in honor of Global Youth Service Day, which happens in late April. The Cape Fear Volunteer Center organizers want to get 600 kids to volunteer this year in honor of Global Youth Service Day, which happens in late April.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Cape Fear Volunteer Center is joining with ten partner agencies in hosting events for Global Youth Service Day around Wilmington.

In honor of the day, which comes in late April, the Cape Fear Volunteer Center wants to get nearly 600 kids to volunteer around the Cape Fear area during the end of March up through the beginning of may. (See below for volunteer opportunities.)

Cape Fear Center for Inquiry

  • March 29 (8 a.m.) Autism Run at Mayfaire Shopping Center next to TrySports Events Field

  • March 31, Mother Hubbard's Cupboard-collect and sort food with Wilmington Downtown, Inc. (food collection until March 31, Deliver to CFCI)

  • March 31, Making cards for the New Hanover Regional Medical Center (Deliver to CFCI by March 31)

Bread for Life

  • April 5, (9 a.m.-1 p.m.) Westminister Presbyterian Church
    • Build a small ramp at Westminster Presbyterian Church to replace the aging one in place. This could be a half day project if supplies and workers were in place. Probably a day otherwise.
    • Do an interior church clean up at Westminster Presbyterian Church; do a lawn and grounds spruce up  i.e lawn care trim
    • Do an  exterior clean up at same location i.e. paint touch up

  • April 5, (9 a.m.-1 p.m.), Need youth for Grounds upkeep at Seagate Baptist Church pantry site...with same as above types of tasks

  • April 7, (9 a.m.-1 p.m.) Same for Satellite Canebreak Apartments, low-income seniors, Need High-Schoolers/College Students to plant flowers and paint shutters

New Hanover County Public Library

  • April 13, (10 a.m.-1 p.m.) Need approximately 30 kids for Book Boxing at the Northeast Regional Library (1241 Military Cutoff Road). Need strong young people to box thousands of books left over from our spring Friends of the Library Booksale. Boxes will be taped, labeled and stacked for shipping, and hundreds of boxes have to be broken down for recycling. The Friends of the Library provide water and snacks.

Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens

  • April 19, (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) Need approximately 10 youth to come out and volunteer in the gardens, projects include bagging up leaves, washing benches, sweeping the porch and helping tend to the plants.

Cape Fear Volunteer Center

  • Ongoing til April 26, Photo contest with Snapyeti  (Go to SnapYeti.com)

  • Ongoing til April 26, GYSD poster contest (send to 214 Walnut Street, Wilmington, NC 28401 or cfvcintern@gmail.com

  • April 26, (12-6 p.m.), Booth at Hugh MacRae Park Earth Day-grant for bullying - art, poetry, role playing

  • April 26, (12pm-6pm), "What would you bring to the Table" theme event, where kids paint a picnic table and bring canned goods for the needy

Brunswick Search and Rescue

  • April 26th, (12-6 p.m.) Hug-A-Tree program to hundreds of children, including Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, during 2014. To assist BSAR with those presentations, GYSD/Earth Day participants will put together hand-out bags containing whistles, plastic garbage bags, blank CDs or DVDs, glow sticks and other items. Also, need 4-6 UNCW volunteers to serve as "lost person" subjects to be located by search dogs during demonstrations at Hugh MacRae Park.

 Bellamy Mansion Museum

  • April 26, (9 a.m.-2 p.m.) Need approximately 15 kids at the mansion to help in the gardens and grounds as well as the building next door could use painting and prepping.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation/Carolinas Chapter/Kiwanis/Woodmen of the World

  • May 3, (9 a.m.) Need volunteers to direct traffic, hand out water, and help clean-up at the Chair of Walk called Great Strides Walk & 5k Run. Registration is at 9am, and the walk / run begins at 10am.  Location is Mayfaire Town Center / Event Field.

      The Guntersville Police Department have released news details on a double shooting late Friday afternoon that left one man dead.

      The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m., when police from multiple law enforcement agencies responded to a 911 call reporting two people had been shot on Edmonds Road.

      The Mississippi Highway Patrol is looking for a driver who ran away from the scene of a deadly crash in George County. Three children were killed in the crash. Troopers said a green 2003 Kia Optima was heading east on Highway 198, east of Depot Road, shortly before 4 p.m. on Saturday.
