HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Sixth graders from across Alabama are learning about disaster preparedness.

The 8th annual Be Ready camp is taking place this week at the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. Thursday afternoon, HEMSI held a hands-only CPR class.

Students learned what to look for in an emergency situation and how to respond to a person in distress.

"They need to understand and know how to help and teach," said Aero Coordinator Dion Schultz. "They can teach this to their families and to their friends. It only takes 5 or 10 minutes and you know how to do it."

During this week, students also learned about emergency preparedness, weather awareness, creating a family disaster plan and water survival. Friday night, the group will participate in a mock drill.
