Spencer High Green Team nominated for Keep Columbus Beautiful awards

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The Spencer High School Green Team has been nominated for several awards with Keep Columbus Beautiful Commission.

This is the first year the team submitted an application and they are been nominated for eight awards.

The Green Team is an interactive educational program that empowers students and teachers to help the environment through waste reduction, recycling and much more.

The awards ceremony will be May 8 at the Columbus Trade Center.

"Makes you feel good about yourself that you're helping the community and giving back," said Silvana Rucker, president of Spencer High School Green Team.

"These are things we've been doing basically just going out into the community and working," added Assistant Principal and Green Team advisor Eddie Powell. "Not to achieve accolades, these are things the students have been doing."

The Green Team is completely voluntary and averages 32 members per year.

The team has helped in numerous community service and beautification projects around Columbus and the Spencer High School campus.

Scattered rain showers will linger this evening, especially east of I-65. There’s also a cold front still to our west that will move through the Valley with time overnight. Another round of heavier showers may develop along that front, but no severe weather is expected.
