Marrow donor program holds mini 5K for children at MUSC

The first ever Match to Marrow 5k is this weekend in North Charleston. The goal is to raise money to pay for bone marrow transplants.

Children being treated at the Medical University of South Carolina are waiting to find a match.

3-year-old Savion Housey is fighting cancer and is being treated at MUSC. Savion says he's feeling better. Savion's mother, Catharene Dobson says he was diagnosed last summer.

"He had the tumor in his head, his stomach and his bone marrow," said Dobson. Savion had a successful bone marrow transplant in December.

The first ever Tot Trot is for kids just like Savion. The mini 5k in the halls of the Children's Hospital at MUSC is a preview to the big race put on by national marrow donor program, be the match.

"Bone marrow transplants affect people of all ages. We help provide the donors that a lot of these families need for their loved one to live," said Ashley Collier, Community Engagement Representative for Be the Match in South Carolina.

Be the match is helping several hundred patients across the state.

"Some are here at MUSC, some are either post transplant or either getting up to the point of a transplant, so hundreds of patients and more importantly their families as well."

The trot wasn't only for kids with cancer. Tymia McCullough has sickle cell, a disease that attacks the blood. There's no cure.

Tymia's mother, Susie Pitts said, "If I had one wish, it would be to take it away from her because I feel she don't deserve this, no one does, no child at all."

Pitts says she showers her daughter with love. Acts of kindness from nurses, doctors and families go a long way for tough children battling tough diseases.

"I just give her the best love of all. She is my number one top priority," said Pitts.

The Match to Marrow 5k will happen Saturday at Wannamaker County Park. It is set to start at 9 am.

All of the money will go to the patients helped by the organization.
