SHELBY COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Memphis police say they have a man in custody that matches a description of a rape suspect. They caught him Thursday morning at the Stonegate Apartments in the 4500 block of Stone Gate Drive.

The complex is less than a mile from the Abington Apartments in Raleigh where three women were raped between February 9 and 12.

According to police, another assault happened at the Abington Apartments Thursday morning. Officers located a suspect while they were checking the area.

A man is in police custody, but no charges have been filed. Investigators towed away the suspect's car. Police are not naming the suspect and will not say for certain if this person is connected to the previous rapes in the area.

"I said then that we were gonna make sure that we did whatever we could day and night to try to find this person responsible for these assaults," said Memphis Police Department Sgt. Alyssa Macon-Moore. "This [Thursday] morning our officers were in the area, and they were able to locate somebody fitting that description."

Action News 5 crews spoke to witnesses on the scene who say police shot a man inside an apartment. MPD says no shots were fired.

For two months now, Tasha Morre has been on the lookout.

"Very concerned. I don't let my kids outside unless I'm with them," she said. "I don't walk to the store like I used to. I stay in the house. If I'm not in the car I don't go nowhere."

Action News 5 spoke with a woman who says the suspect is her son, and she thinks police have the wrong man.
