Arizona soccer set for Portland Thorns matchup

Posted: Updated:
Tucson, AZ -

University of Arizona soccer will open up its spring schedule with a match against the Portland Thorns of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) at North Stadium at Kino Sports Complex on Friday, March 28, at 7 p.m. The match is part of the Thorns' preseason training and Arizona's spring schedule and will be hosted by FC Tucson.

"I'm excited for our players to see soccer at the highest level," head coach Tony Amato said. "This will be eye-opening for them to see next level play. We want to play quicker and have a high speed of play and we hope to take positive things out of this opportunity."

The Wildcats completed the 2013 season with an overall record of 9-7-4, earning the first winning record UA has seen since 2005. Arizona was undefeated for six-straight games, including a notable 0-0 tie against No. 24 Ohio State and a 6-0 shutout against UC Riverside. The 3-0-3 start for the Wildcats was the best since 1994, the program's inaugural year.

"We are super excited and we want to show the Tucson community that we can play soccer," Amato said. "The biggest thing for us is that we want to keep creating an elite environment. We want our players to have an elite experience and we work towards that goal everyday."

The defending NWSL Champions, Portland Thorns FC earned the league's inaugural title in 2013. Featuring some of the best women's soccer players in the world, including U.S. Women's National Team forward Alex Morgan and Canada Women's National Team forward Christine Sinclair, Thorns FC are a member of the nine-team NWSL which began play in 2013.

Tickets will be $10 (non-seat backs) and $15 (seat backs). Arizona fans are encouraged to sit in section 106, the Wildcats' official seating section.

Up next, the Cats will return to Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium, in Tucson, Ariz., to take on New Mexico on Sun., March 30, at 11 a.m. This match concludes the home slate for the spring schedule before the Wildcats travel to El Paso, Texas, Las Cruces, N.M. and Flagstaff, Ariz. for the remainder of the spring schedule.
