Coaches tab Johnson an All-American

University of Arizona junior guard Nick Johnson was recognized forhis standout 2013-14 season by Division I coaches from around the nation onWednesday when he was named a first-team All-American by the NationalAssociation of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

Johnson is the second UA player to earn NABC All-America honorsunder head coach Sean Miller – joining Derrick Williams in 2011 – but theWildcats' first first-team honoree since Miles Simon in 1998. With Johnson'sselection, 12 Arizona players have now combined to earn a total of 14 NABCAll-America honors, including a total of six first-team accolades.

Johnson is the lone Pac-12 player on any of the three five-manNABC All-America teams. On Sunday, he was named one of four national finalistsfor the Naismith Trophy along with Doug McDermott of Creighton, Jabari Parkerof Duke and Louisville's Russ Smith.

Johnson, who has also been named a first-team All-American by boththe Sporting News and the USBWA, leads Arizona in scoring (16.3) and rankssecond on the team in assists (2.8) and steals (1.2). He is shooting 44.3percent from the floor and 7692 percent from the free throw line, whileaveraging a career-high 3.9 rebounds and posting a 1.63 assist-to-turnoverratio to help lead the Wildcats to their second regular-season Pac-12 title inthe last four years.

The Gilbert, Ariz., native has reached the 20-point mark ateam-high 11 times on the year and has one double-double. He became the 48thmember of Arizona's 1,000-point club in mid-January, scoring in double figuresin 33 of 36 games. His 587 points on the season mark the second-bestsingle-season total in Miller's tenure.

Last week, Johnson averaged 17.5 points, 3.0 assists and 2.0steals per game, while shooting 60.0 percent from beyond the arc, to lead theWildcats out of San Diego and into the Sweet 16 for the second year in a rowand third time in four seasons.

He currently ranks eighth in the Pac-12 overall ranking in scoring(16.3), ninth in three-point field goals per game (1.7), 12th in steals pergame (1.2) and 14th in assists per game (2.8). He finished the conferenceseason ranked 10th in scoring (16.2), fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8),seventh in steals per game (1.5) and 14th in assists per game (3.0) in Pac-12games.

Johnson has been named Pac-12 Player of the Year, first-teamAll-Pac-12, Pac-12 All-Defensive Team, USBWA District IX Player of the Year andfirst-team USBWA All-District 20 in recognition of his efforts. He was the MostOutstanding Player at the NIT Season Tip-Off and a member of the Pac-12Tournament All-Tournament Team, and has also been named a finalist for both theWooden Award and Robertson Trophy.

In addition to helping lead Arizona to the regular-season Pac-12title and the Pac-12 Tournament championship game, Johnson has helped Arizonatop the AP poll for a program-record eight-consecutive weeks this season. Thisyear's UA team posted the best start (21-0) and longest winning streak (21games) in program history, and currently ranks second on the program'ssingle-season wins list.'
