Florence Police say scammers are calling utility customers and demanding payment. Florence Police say scammers are calling utility customers and demanding payment.
FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

The Florence Police Department warned citizens of a scam Wednesday.

According to police, someone is "spoofing" city phone numbers and claiming to be from the city utilities department. During the call, the scammer demands payment over the phone and threatening to cut off electric service.

It is not the policy of the city of Florence to request payment over the phone. Florence Utilities said four restaurants reported the bogus calls on Wednesday.

Anyone who receives a scam call like this should call Florence Police at 256-768-2728. Customers should also report the fake calls to the utilities department by calling 256-760-6512.

Investigators are working on identifying the origin of the calls.
