BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Police officers say a man was shot while driving on Interstate 59 North late Tuesday night in Birmingham.

Officials say after the victim was shot, he wrecked his car trying to get off at the Arkadelphia Road exit.

When emergency crews got to the wreck, they discovered the driver had been shot several times. The car's exterior was riddled with bullet holes.

The driver was taken to a hospital. He is on life support and in critical condition, Lt. Sean Edwards with Birmingham Police said.

Officers are still trying to find out where he was shot and who shot him. Detectives are searching the scene and the car for clues. But with the victim on life support, they don't have a lot of answers.

So far, police have not made any arrests.
