MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A Marshall County man is accused of hunting for native artifacts along the Tennessee River, but his troubles with the law intensified when TVA police discovered he was in possession of meth.

TVA officials said 46-year-old Timothy Wade Stewart of Scottsboro has been cited for artifact removal from TVA property. Meanwhile, sheriff's officials said he was then charged by Marshall County with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Stewart was apprehended by TVA officials on the Tennessee River just below Guntersville Dam Friday afternoon, while allegedly looking for arrowheads on the riverbank of TVA land.

According to the TVA website, the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 makes it illegal to excavate on federal property without a research permit. It goes on to say that a person can be charged with theft of government property if found to be in possession of artifacts from TVA property.

The site also says use of metal detectors on TVA property is prohibited.

Stewart has been released from the county jail on bond.
