TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police are looking for a man they say shot a dog in east Toledo on Monday.

Police say Marcus Crawford shot a stray dog, seriously injuring the animal.

Crawford has served time for felony assault, and has 12 warrants for his arrest at the moment, according to Toledo Police.

According to online court documents, a person saw Crawford walk down Clark Street on Monday, approach a "non violent" German shepherd, and shoot it once before running off.

The dog will have one of her legs amputated Friday.

Those who live in the neighborhood say the dog was a stray, but never showed any signs of aggression.

The young female German Shepherd was found with a bullet in one of her front limbs. A Veterinarian caring for her says although the limb will likely have to be amputated, the dog is lucky the shot didn't hit her heart or other internal organs.

Those who live in the area say they just don't understand why someone would do this.

"This dog wasn't bothering nobody. It was just traveling up and down trying to get food," said Janet Goforth. "I don't know how a person can do that, I don't understand. It angers me, it angers me real bad. Even if the dog was a stray that doesn't give someone the right to shoot a dog."

The veterinarian caring for the dog says it's unclear how much surgery will cost.

The dog will have one leg amputated Friday and spend the weekend at the vet's clinic. She will then be placed in a foster home through Planned Pethood on Monday.

Donations to help cover the cost of surgery can be made to the Lucas County Canine Care and Control's Cutie's Fund.

The dog will be in the care of Planned Pethood after recovering from surgery. All adoption inquiries can be forwarded to Planned Pethood. For more visit http://www.plannedpethood.org/.
