Beaufort County Council votes 6-5 against putting penny sales tax to ballot

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

In only the first vote, Beaufort County Council members voted 6-5 against including the Local Option Sales Tax on the ballot.

There was debate between council members about whether the county should oppose it simply because it is a sales tax or include it and let voters decide for themselves.

Earlier, council members amended the agenda item to be an ordinance instead of a resolution.

Chairman Paul Sommerville was one of the five who voted in favor of adding it to the November referendum.

"Well, I think the voters should decide," he said. "Anything this controversial or important I think should go to the voters. I don't think we should make that decision on it, I think the voters should make that decision, that's always been my position."

Because it did not pass the first vote, the Local Option Sales Tax will not be included on the November referendum.
