Convicted rapist sentenced to 25 years in prison

GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Marshall County man convicted of raping two children is going to prison.

Last month, a jury convicted Colton Hall of raping two girls, aged 11 and 15, while he was out on bond for stabbing another man.

Hall said nothing Monday morning prior to the hearing, where a circuit court judge sentenced Hall to a total 300 months in prison and 10 months of supervised probation.

Hall's family asked the judge for leniency, but prosecutors said a strong message needed to be sent to the community that this kind of behavior was unacceptable.

"You feel for the children," said District Attorney Steve Marshall. "You hopefully know that this sends a message to them that their strength and courage in testifying was worth it, and that they see the justice system worked on their behalf."

Marshall said Hall must serve the majority of his sentence. "Sentencing guidelines haven't changed. What has changed is requiring more day-for-day sentences in crimes involving children under the age of 12. Our legislature has given us a greater hammer in this area, one that prosecutors use effectively and allows us to get a greater sentence that we would not ordinarily be allowed to," he said.

Hall must still face the felony assault charges related to the stabbing in court.
