HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

National Puppy Day has come and gone – but do you know why the day was announced?

Many of you submitted photos of your furry pals throughout the day. Dogs of all shapes, sizes, dispositions graced our inboxes all Sunday long.

Everyone can agree: those are all lovely, lucky pooches. They are lovely because they have a family that adores them. They are lucky because many other dogs across the Tennessee Valley and the country never get that chance.

As the organizers of National Puppy Day have said since 2006, while the day is to celebrate the love puppies bring to our lives, it is also a day to help save orphaned puppies and educate the public about the dangers of puppy mills.

Adoption trumps shopping for pups, said the organizers, and there are between 8-10,000 puppy mills that breed dogs in sometimes unhealthy conditions on top of the untold numbers of stray dogs that continue to multiply. Both factors lead to the overpopulation of dogs in the country, along with a lack of spaying and neutering.

The leaders of National Puppy day provided a list of other ways you can celebrate your puppies year-round – and help the cause of finding good loving homes for the others that aren't as lucky as yours.
