HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

March 23, 1857 marks an uplifting date in American History.

It was on that date that Elisha Otis installed the first passenger safety elevator in New York City. His design kept the passenger car aloft, even if the cable hoisting the elevator broke.

According to the US Census Bureau, making and installing elevators and escalators has developed into a $2.5 billion business for approximately 190 companies in America, and employs more than 9,500 people.

In Alabama, some of those companies include Bagby Elevator Company of Birmingham, and Otis Elevator Company, which has offices in Birmingham, Huntsville and Montgomery. In 2013, Finnish firm KONE Inc. acquired Elevator Maintenance & Repair out of Prattville.
