GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Alex Kenny and his sister, Anastasia Reece, are very close. They play together, sliding and running in a Greenville playground. But recently, they worked together too.

They set a goal in a school fundraiser to collect $1,000 for the American Heart Association.

The siblings were given a flier at their school, AJ Whittenberg Elementary, to take part in the Jump Road for Heart program. It is a 35-year-old program to have kids jump rope to raise money for heart disease research and awareness.

The kids decided to hit the streets of downtown Greenville because they were inspired by the photo of a young child who suffers from a heart-related condition on the flier they received.

The brother and sister spent several hours over the course of two weekends, near Greenville's Falls Park and the Peace Center. Their mother, Vanessa Kenny, was with the whole time. They approached people, asking for donations of a dollar each. Their goal was to collect $200 a day, with a grand total of $1,000.

But what makes their dedication even more amazing is that the brother, sister and their parents live at Miracle Hill's Greenville Rescue Mission. The family is essentially homeless. They moved to the Upstate five months ago from New York.

The transition has been a difficult one, but they are thankful for the help they have received from Miracle Hill and the local church they attend. Their mother believes taking part in the Jump Rope for Heart program was a way for her children to give back.

The brother and sister raised so much money, it got the attention of the American Heart Association. Inspired by their story, they are giving both of the children a new scooter.

They qualified for one with the amount of money they brought in. The kids say they are excited about their prizes, but even happier about the money they raised.
