FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

After more than a year of construction and weather setbacks, the new Florence Freshman Center will open to students in a matter of weeks.

"It's an exciting time for the kids to actually have a separate building where they can say this is our school, and not be co-mingled with other students from another grade level," said Assistant Superintendent of Florence City Schools Connie Wallace. "Academically and socially, it's good to have them apart so it gives them another year to mature."

School leaders were anxious to move into the building, and they hope to do so at the end of April.

"We do plan to move students in at least three or four weeks before school gets out. That way, it will give us times to make any adjustments like with traffic patterns, or bell schedules, anything we can do so when we open school in the fall. Everything will have been worked out and it's seamless."

The estimated 48-thousand square foot facility will provide state of the art technology, and a learning environment to help students make the transition from middle to high school.

Project Manager Josh Wilburn said the project held a special meaning. "I have two kids that are in the school system, so it's been really important to me, to be a part of what's going on for the community, and to feel like I'm making a big contribution to not only my company's outcome, but also to my kids that will eventually one day get to come through this building."
