MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The Madison County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a man was killed in his driveway Friday afternoon.

Deputies responded to the scene in the area of Colemont Lane and Winchester Road around 3 p.m.

The victim was Richard Kier, 73-years-old. He was found shot to death in his driveway.

Erskine Hughes, 63-years-old, was charged with the crime and arrested. He was booked into Madison County Jail on a $250-thousand bond. Investigators said Hughes contacted them, and then showed up at their records department. They took him in for questioning and then charged him with the murder.

A gun was found in a nearby dumpster. It is currently being processed to determine if it is connected to the crime. Authorities are still working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and if others were home at the time.

Sergeant Brian Chaffin of the Madison County Sheriff's Office said, "At this time we are still following up, trying to determine how they knew each other, if they were business partners, we don't know. We have several investigators out in the field that are attempting to follow up on leads, talk with family and friends of the victim and also to locate someone who can help us with information related to the offender."

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
