HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The first phase of an urban development project in downtown Huntsville called Twickenham Square is officially open for business.

Developers, city leaders, and members of the community gathered to cut the ribbon at the brand-new Homewood Suites Wednesday.

The hotel is the first component to be complete in the massive project, which includes a Publix, 242 apartment units, and 110,000 square feet of office and retail space.

"This is the kickoff to a whole urban village in the city. That is something we've been trying to do for a long time. One of the reasons you want to do that is attracting the young, upwardly-mobile population," said Mayor Tommy Battle.

The development is expected to generate $2.3 million in tax revenue every year for the city.
