GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A business is looking to expand and create more jobs in Guntersville, but some people who live around the proposed expansion site don't want the area re-zoned from residential to industrial.

The owner of the 17-acre tract of pasture land is now asking the city council to rezone the property, after it narrowly passed the planning board by a 3-2 vote last week.

Sunrise Industries, a company that makes protective outerwear for industry and healthcare workers, has outgrown their current location just down the road. Company officials said they need to expand. The company wants to buy that tract of land, which is currently out of the industrial park's bounds, and which is residentially zoned.

"My concerns are more traffic on Highway 79, especially kids playing and catching the school bus," said resident Carolyn Headrick-Pike. Residents like Headrick-Pike said they chose to live in the area because of the peaceful, quiet surroundings.

"It's my home. I don't want to leave it. It's modest but it suits us just fine, we're happy here, and we don't want to be infringed on with trucks and noises," she said.

Company representatives said they love the area as well, and do not want to move out either. "We've maintained a Guntersville mailing address and banks, but it's been difficult," said company president John Petrey. "There's always been a warehouse shortage here, and we'd like to stay, but we'll see."

No date has been set for the public hearing with the city council.
