HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

If you live in Huntsville and drive an electric car, you can soon charge it downtown.

Wednesday, crews installed the city's first public electric car charger. It's a rapid level 4 charger located right across from City Hall.

There will be a fee to use it. Payments will likely be accepted through a parking meter or credit card.

The city is also considering 10 other locations to add a charging station.

"When people get excited and know they have a place they can come downtown and make their routine to where they know they can get a charge, then there's just going to be more and more people and of course this is where the future is going," said Joy McKee with Operation Green Team.

Nissan donated the charger. According to Operation Green Team, there are currently 50 electric cars in the city.

The charger is expected to be ready for use within a week.
