HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A group of construction workers who said they haven't been paid in weeks received paychecks Wednesday, after they rallied against management.

Members of the group contacted WAFF 48 News. They are working to renovate the Fern Parc apartments off of South Memorial Parkway. The workers said they had not been paid in weeks for the renovation work they have been doing.

The group said they weren't going to work another minute until they were paid. A sign on the property said the complex was undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation.

One of the construction managers didn't answer any questions and slammed the door on reporters.

Someone contacted the Huntsville Police Department and officers responded to the complex around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Officers said the construction company did cut checks to all of the workers there and the renovation work resumed.

The building permit on the property lists the contractor as BBMK Contracting out of South Florida. The company was called and asked why it took a visit from WAFF and Huntsville Police before the workers were paid for the first time in weeks.

Company representatives said they are looking into it, but that they don't have any record at this time of doing any work at Fern Parc. Workers here said they're just happy to finally see a check.

The Better Business Bureau says if a construction group doesn't pay their crews, the crews need to report it to the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations. Legal analysts said any claims below $3,000 need to go to small-claims court. Claims between $3-10,000 should be filed at district or circuit court. Anything over $10,000 must be filed in circuit court.

The workers at Fern Parc said if they have any further issues with the checks - for instance, if they bounce - the group will protest in front of the complex until they say they get the money they were promised.
