BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The late Birmingham city councilor Maxine Parker was honored by the council Tuesday.

The city's annual Relay For Life to raise money for cancer research will now be known as the Maxine Herring Parker Relay for Life.

Parker passed away from cancer in November 2013. Her son William was appointed to take over her seat in District 4.

Councilor Jay Roberson says he and William Parker wanted to honor Parker and others who have battled cancer.

"I thought it was a way, we should not forget her leadership, this would be a way to honor her. As you were aware, she was a cancer patient at the time, and died of cancer. As you know this is a silent disease that affects many people," Roberson said.

The city's Relay for Life race will take place June 13 at the CrossPlex.
