ALBERTVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Plans for a $25 million retail shopping development in Albertville are moving forward after the city council approved funding for part of the project Monday night.

The Albertville City Council voted to contribute $5 million to the project for land and infrastructure use. City leaders see it as in investment that will bring people – and their money – in town to shop. They feel the tax dollars will make their way back to City Hall.

At Monday's meeting, the developer addressed concerns from residents who have property around the proposed site, which is off Highway 431 behind the Santa Fe Restaurant. The city will spend the next few weeks hammering out the details of the agreement before voting to take out the $5 million bond.

City Council President Nathan Broadhurst said council members were a bit surprised to hear the developer say the project may be larger than the 90-million square feet they first agreed upon.

"He talked more around 100-125,000 square feet last night, which I think is good news," said Broadhurst. "I think that means he's got interest from multiple stores that want to come to Albertville, and that's a good thing. If he's having to build bigger, that means he's got a lot more people interested."

Broadhurst said the developer hopes to have the project completed by the fall of 2015.
