BIRMINGHAM, AL (WAFF) -

A company that operates walk-in clinics across Alabama was ordered to pay Uncle Sam over $1 million after being accused of ripping off Medicare.

The Justice Department announced the agreement with Birmingham-based American Family Care on Tuesday. Along with Alabama, AFC operates clinics in Tennessee and Georgia.

Federal investigators said the company has been knowingly overcharging Medicare for outpatient visits for years.

The claims were brought to light by a former employee-turned-whistle blower.

We want to correct an errorin this story. We incorrectly reported that "the crimewas brought to light by a former employee turned whistle blower."

We want to make it clear that there was nocriminal charge in this matter. The settlement stems from a law suit and American Family Care agreed to pay the settlement without any admission ofwrongdoing.
