VALLEY HEAD, AL (WAFF) -

Students in a DeKalb County school dealing with mold issues have been moved to other parts of campus while work begins to clean up the problem.

School officials hope to speed up the project, saying there was good attendance at Monday night's meeting to hear the superintendent lay out his plan to correct the problem.

Emergency management and first responders were called to Valley Head School last week amid mold concerns. Now school officials are laying out a play to remove it from the high school building.

Students in that building have been moved to other buildings on campus for their protection. Meanwhile, cleanup crews are preparing to go in as early as the end of the week to begin the process, which is expected to take 30-35 days.

School officials said they will bring in portable classrooms to alleviate overcrowding. They stressed there may not be as many portables as there are classrooms affected, but between auxiliary buildings and portables, there should be enough space to accommodate everyone.

Last week, a wall sample was sent off for testing to see if it contained asbestos. Those results are still pending.
