A public fund is now established for anyone who would like to help a 9-year-old Prattville boy who was injured in an accidental shooting.

Bank officials with First Community Bank of Central Alabama say the "Faulk Family Fund" has been established to help the family. Donations can be made at any branch. [BRANCH LOCATIONS]

When the Autauga Academy Generals played a double-header Tuesday, head coach Joe Faulk wasn't in the dugout or in the third base box. That's because the coach is in Birmingham at Children's Hospital, caring for his young son.

Prattville police say third grader Amos Faulk was accidentally shot once in the chest at a friend's home on Upper Kingston Road last Thursday.

Pitcher Zach Paulene said the coach's absence was going to be a little odd. The team's assistant coaches took over as the players took on Lyman Ward School to honor their coach.

"It's going to be a little weird not having Coach Joe out there, but I feel like we can get out there and play the baseball he taught us to play," Paulene said Tuesday.

"The cardiologist came in and said he's going to make a full recovery heart-wise, but he did have a setback with his collapsed lung," said Autauga Academy Athletic Director Michael Sims.

There are several fundraisers in the works. Sims says the family's biggest need right now is food. Coach Sims is encouraging people who want to help the family to call the school.

"This will be less stress on them and it will allow them to focus on Amos so he can recover," Sims said.

The popular third grader is not out of the woods yet, but he's getting there. Barring anymore setbacks Amos should be home in two weeks.

Back on the diamond players like Paulene miss the little boy who often hung out with the team, nothing like a close call to put the game of baseball in its proper perspective.

"As long as we know he's okay that's all that matters," Paulene said. It's a lesson Zach Paulene is learning today.
