FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Mark Edwin Montgomery, the man charged in the deaths of two women, made his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon.

When asked about the events that transpired the previous day, Montgomery said he doesn't remember. He then turned to cameras and said, "My lawyer advised me not to say nothing to ya'll just a second ago, but I am going to tell my son hi and I love him."

A Lauderdale County judge appointed an attorney for Montgomery during the hearing and advised him of his charges.

Montgomery was charged with capital murder and booked into jail without bond after leading officers on a chase around 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Investigators said two women, Joanna Strickland Butler and Clo Ann Taylor Stoner, were found shot to death at a home on County Road 10.  A dog was also found dead from a gunshot wound at the crime scene.

Montgomery's sister was at the home at the time he is accused of firing the fatal shots. Officials said she panicked, called her other brother and 911.

The district attorney said investigators are still looking for a motive for the murders, and that the current theory is that it was a case of domestic violence. Stoner was reportedly dating Montgomery and Butler was dating Montgomery's brother.

"We know what happened. Now we want to know why," said DA Chris Connolly. "Our heart goes out to these families and we're going to work in partnership with law enforcement and continue to follow the leads out."

Montgomery is being held in the Lauderdale County Jail without bond.
