Auburn University announced Tuesday the hiring of Bruce Pearl as their new head basketball coach.
Pearl coached the Tennessee Volunteers from 2005 through the 2011 season. All six of his teams made it to the NCAA tournament. Pearl also worked as a basketball analyst for ESPN.
His move to the Plains comes with baggage; Pearl is still serving a three-year NCAA show-cause penalty, which expires Aug. 23. Pearl was cited for failure to monitor the program at Tennessee, after lying during an investigation into a cover-up regarding impermissible contact with a recruit.
Auburn has 30 days to file a report with the NCAA either contesting or accepting the show-cause penalty. They will most likely ask the NCAA to shorten the timeframe so that Pearl can get to work. If not, he can only evaluate recruits during July and will not be allowed contact with them.
Pearl will be replacing Tony Barbee, who was dismissed last week as head coach.
