JPS teacher formally charged with statutory rape of 14 year old

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

JPS teacher, Willie Moorehead, appeared in court on Tuesday and was charged with statutory rape of a 14 year old. His bond is set at $100,000.

Rankin investigators say the teen was allegedly picked up by Moorehead at her Jackson home on March 10 while the mother was sleeping. The teacher is accused of taking her to a public park in Rankin county; where the alleged sexual encounter occurred.

Moorehead's black BMW was also seized by Rankin county authorities.

"We seized his car... got a search warrant for his car," said the Sheriff after Moorehead's arrest last week. "The investigation is still ongoing. We made it to the point we need to arrest this guy. We feel like he's a danger to the public."

Even more disturbing, the mother said this was not the teacher's first sexual liaison with her daughter.

Sheriff Bryan Bailey told us he is sharing information with the Jackson Police Department.

"I don't want to interfere with anybody else's investigation, but, yes, we are communicating with them and ,yes, there is the possibility there are other charges pending against him in other jurisdictions," said Sheriff Bailey.

The young students' mother, who we will not identify, said Willie Moorehead met her daughter last year at Siwell and befriended her. She claims he enticed her daughter into a sexual relationship when she was 13 years old.

Late Tuesday afternoon, Jackson Public Schools released the following statement:

Jackson Public Schools (JPS) takes the allegations brought forth very seriously and is cooperating with authorities in the investigation."  "JPS Campus Enforcement is also conducting an investigation into the matter.

We will update you with any new information that we receive on the case.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
