BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A Gadsden police officer is in the hospital after being critically injured in a motorcycle wreck on Saturday.

Sgt. Gary Pierce was involved in a wreck with another vehicle near Whorton Bend Drive and Rainbow Drive on Saturday afternoon, Captain Paul Cody with GPD said.

He was transported to Gadsden Regional Medical Center, then airlifted to UAB where he is still in intensive care.

Gadsden police say Pierce suffered a traumatic brain injury and his recovery will take weeks, and possibly months.

Pierce had been recently transferred from working the third shift patrol to the Etowah County Narcotics Enforcement Unit.

Word of Pierce's wreck and injuries spread on Facebook during the weekend and a "Prayers for Gary P." Facebook page now has more than 5,700 "likes."

Police describe Pierce as a well-liked officer, and say they're grateful for the support they've received from the law enforcement community.

"We're taking it all pretty hard. Sergeant Pierce, Gary, is a well-liked guy. He's a cop's cop. And he's important to us," Captain Cody said.

People who want to donate to help the Pierce family can contact any location of Winsouth Credit Union. Donations should be made to the Gary Pierce Recovery Fund.

A fellow GPD officer set up an account for donations through the First Responders for Christ website, 1stresponders4christ.com. Donations should be designated for the Pierce family fund.

The First United Methodist Church of Hokes Bluff is also collecting donations to help with his family's needs while he is in the hospital.

A motorcycle group is also planning a ride called "One Way Out" to raise money for the family on Saturday, March 29.
