Buckhorn High School biology teacher given high honor

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Dr. Matt Dean said teaching was not the career he'd planned. "I originally went in to school thinking I wanted to be a pharmacist, and did an internship in a pharmacy, and realized I just didn't like that," he says.

Dean said he was nervous about teaching at first.

"I heard bad things about a career as a teacher, but I think it's the best decision I've ever made."

The AP Biology and Physics teacher at Buckhorn High School has just been named Madison County Schools Secondary Teacher of the Year.

Dr. Dean said the great thing about teaching is that it's never boring. "Every day is different. You get to deal with kids, so it's unpredictable. You get to learn new things, but I think the interaction with people is the best part," he said.
