State releases January unemployment numbers

ALABAMA (WAFF) -

The Alabama Department ofLabor announced Monday that the preliminary unemployment rate for January is6.1 percent. The rate is unchanged from December and is below the January 2013rate of 6.7 percent.

According to Monday's report, thenumber of people working in Alabama in the month of January increased to1,990,637 from 1,984,264 reported in December 2013.

In the Tennessee Valley, Limestoneand Cullman Counties came in with some of the lowest unemployment rates, reporting 5.8percent.

In JobLink, an onlinejobs database for the state of Alabama, there were 21,315 active job orders for the month of January. The number was the highest recorded in the nine years the site has been active.

"Looking at theseasonally adjusted numbers, we saw growth in both the labor force and thenumber of people working in Alabama in January, and those are positive signs.Additionally, the number of job orders we received on JobLink have, once again,set a record for the highest number of job orders in the history of the site,"said Department of Labor Commissioner Tom Surtees. "Although the number of jobsreported decreased, this is a common occurrence in January, and is due, inlarge part, to retailers laying off seasonal help."

January's rate represents130,444 unemployed in Alabama, compared to 129,633 in December 2013, and144,410 in January 2013.
