Old tradition brings in money, energy for Reitz football season

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

A new football coach at Reitz brought back an old tradition on Saturday, raising money for the team and raising moral for the season.

Lucas White graduated from Reitz High School as a member of the football team in 2007.  He remembers participating in a Lift-A-Thon when he was a player and he's bringing it back as a coach.

"The kids come in here with a great energy and they get it. They understand that this is the type of work they are going to have to put in and they feed off of each other," White says.

The players are pushing the pounds to make the money.

"Its going to help them get new equipment so we can get bigger, faster, stronger and stay healthy through the season," White says.

They have sponsors -friends, family members, and businesses -who have agreed to donate a certain cent amount per pound or a certain dollar amount to the team.

"It's all for the kids and that's the most important thing we need to keep in mind,"

As for the kids, they are keeping the upcoming season in mind.

"Just being strong and being in shape really plays a big role in being on the field and it's just really good," junior Tanner Duran says.

Junior lineback, Zach Cooke, says he is already seeing big results.

"We're a lot stronger than we were last year. We're a lot bigger than we were last year. We're a lot more dedicated than we were last year and those three are extremely important in the game of football," Zach Cooke says.

The players are stepping it up this off-season and they credit their new strength and conditioning coach.

"When Lucas White came, everything really turned around," Duran says.

"He brings a lot of energy to the weight room that we try to imitate so as long as he's been around us our energy's been through the roof," Cooke says.

Lucas is weighing in on the lives of his players and, in return, his players are doing the same for him.

"You won't find a better more confident more hard working group of men than these right here and I am as proud as ever to be their coach," White says.

A feeling that, even at the Lift-A-Thon, no weight can match.

The Reitz football program, with a proud coach and a dedicated team, raised nearly $10,000.
