Memphis to face George Washington in NCAA tournament

Posted: Updated:
(WMC-TV) - Memphis is now officially heading to the dance. The Tigers will face off against the George Washington Colonials and Action News 5 spoke to members of the community about what this could mean for the city.

The night before many start wearing green, Memphis Tigers fans were decked out in blue for Selection Sunday.

"We were watching it over at my fraternity house rooting on the Tigers hoping we got a good seed," said Matthew Nelson.

On Sunday evening, the Tigers learned that they will play George Washington on Friday in Raleigh, North Carolina as a No. 8 seed. The team did not make it very far in its conference championship at home in FedExForum, but fans say that is no reason to cut short on the excitement.

"Numbers really don't mean anything in my opinion because in the past lower seeds have beaten higher seeds," said student, Blake Mayfield.

Raleigh is about 11 hours away from Memphis, depending on who is driving. Students just returned from spring break and some are not sure if they will be able to make the road trip.

"I would love to make the drive out to North Carolina, it's such a beautiful place. It's just school getting into the swing, I just think we'll have to root on our tigers from home," added Nelson.

March Madness is here and in a city with so much Tiger pride, fans cannot wait for Friday; even if the path to the championship might be a difficult one.

"It's Memphis. Grit and grind, people always underestimate us and when we shock the world that'll be the best part."
